Inspection work and checking of incoming materials and outgoing orders for other Gulf units are conducted in this air-and temperature-conditioned room off the main work floor

Doohickeys α Specialty Λ/fANY an important research project has been stalled -*--*• while laboratory workers attempted to get a badly needed piece of equipment made. Not so at the Gulf Research Laboratories at Harmarville, Pa., where a completely equipped and manned machine shop is prepared to meet the metal-working requirements of the laboratories' staff of chemists, physicists, and engineers. Products of the shop vary from clocks for bottom hole pressure gages used in oil well drilling and production, to harvesters used to gather pyrethrum daises for use in the company's insecticides.

Speed is a watchword of the shop, and the creative abilities of the individual are encouraged to the utmost. Mechanics of specialized abilities are needed, and an apprenticeship of 10,000 hours in the shop is required before graduation to full-fledged journeyman. Workers are aware and proud to be working in the foreground of science.

The electroplating room, of original design by plant engineers, has a blower vent system for removing fumes, and suitable baths for copper-, nickel-, chrome-, silver-, gold-, cadmium-, lead-, tin-, and indium plating

In a separate, sound-proofed grim grinding oils is conducted in coopc in addition to the grinding operati

Research machine shop from the he size and scope of the opera-or occupying 10,676 square feet

Above. Work on the chassis of a marsh buggy, a huge-wheeled vehicle developed for prospecting work in swampy and flooded regions. Other equipment used in field research activities is assembled, equipped, and repaired here

Experimental development is slow, but when a part is wanted time is precious. Tool racks at mill- ">* ing machines * are equipped with all accessories to save time

Phosphorbronze, beryllium copper, stainless steel, invar, and elin-var, and various plastics are among the 2,600 different items stocked for possible u s e in meeting the special needs of the laboratory

room, constant testing of Gulf's with oil-development technicians

ïquired by the regular shop work

Special truck bodies needed for seismograph operations, storage tanks, ventilating units, gear boxes, machine guards are among the hundreds of items fabricated in the sheet metal and welding shop located in a sound proof room next to the assembly bay
