Foreword
Ecléa Bosi states in her report Memória e Sociedade(Memory and Society) that remembrance lies in the city stones of our affections in amuch stronger tangle than wecan fathom.
Such certainty fell upon her while standing in the center of her hometown, whereeverything, or almost everything, had changed. Onthat moment, she discovered under her feet the same
paving stones she had stepped on as a child. And that was a great comfort.
The same taste for rediscovery seems to be what prompted researcher CéliaBassalo to reveal what is left of Art Nouveau in her nativeBelém through this guide produced for the HeritageItineraries series by theMonumenta/Iphan Program.
It is worth it to be guided by memories of affections.

The Industrial Revolution propitiated economicdevelopment in thecontemporary world; it qualitatively transformed
productive processes and triggered, among other things, the advent of the great industries, the expansion of world trade, the birth of theindustrial bourgeoisie, of new social and economic doctrines
and of stronger rivalry betweennations. That was wheneconomic and social power ceased to belong exclusively totrade capitalism, and made itsway to other segments —namely, to all those who were
productive and who could amass fortunes.
Living under thisatmosphere of economic power, thebourgeois society in
the late 19
th
century was already culturally refined, euphoric and carefree, and as suchneeded an art style toreflect their illusory enthusiasm —

technology — and to satisfy their practical and “cultural”demands. Under theseconditions, a new, elegant and refined style was born, coherent above all with thecustoms of the bourgeois
society, and especially related to the decorative arts, whether interior or exterior.
Sensing that the astounding industrial development of their time allowed for the serial
production of artworks, the
artists in the end of that century, in turn,
through their romantically inspired

spontaneous and original artistic

personal desires.Moving away fromModernism, in an

rejeitar sutilmente a máquina.

result of that quest was Art Nouveau, a subtle rejection of the machine.
Adopting an exclusive and cultivated attitude towards art and life, the aesthetes of Art Nouveau allied with simplicity
the beautiful and the useful, matter and spirit, harmoniously adapting theaesthetical to the technical. Intheir work, they used natureitself as a material, expressing and proclaiming nature’sunending creativity as themost important source of inspiration. It should bestressed, however, that somedecorative elements of Art Nouveau were also featured in
previous styles.The most direct influence,
perhaps due to its proximity, was the utilitarian art of William Morris, the Britishwriter, poet, painter and drawing artist. His art, well
deserving of the name, explored the craftsmanship of domestic architecture and interior design, with the purpose of replacing everything related to the cold objectivity of the machine with

The artist created this vaseinspired by elements of fauna and
flora, the latter suggested by thehues of green in the leaves and abluish white in the woman’soutfit. The young girl seems tobloom from nature itself, withwhich she merges. Her delicatehand moves towards the bird as if she wanted to gently push himaway. On the base, playful puttiare represented – figures of naked, plump little boys, anornamental motif commonly used in sculpture and in painting,
particularly during theRenaissance. The colors and thedelicate finish of the vase call one’s attention. The piece belongsto a private owner.

The aforementioned expression Art Nouveau was
created in France, and is perhaps the most widespread, and the one used in Brazil. With the construction of theMétropolitain by Hector Guimard, it becamefashionable to refer to it as

2o – viver, valorizar

As stressed by experts, some of the most evident purposes of Art Nouveauare:

– To break with therepetitive “historical” style;to cease to perpetuate analready extinguished past,opposing what theacademicists wished to do;
2o – To live and to add
artistic value to the present,connecting the useful (functional) to the beautiful (ornamental), for they represent the mirror inwhich bourgeois society sees itself;
3o – To create a young,novel style, seeking innovation and modernity,and, in some respects,rationality.
We don’t mean to affirm
that, because of those purposes, Art Nouveaurepresented a rupture with the past. On the contrary, all that was apparently new and original in it arose from their dealings with time (past:

No fin-de-siècle3 emergiu amulher-flor usando e

curves. The beauty of color and the sinuous bodies would draw the consumer towardsthe new, the unexpected, and,for that, they were also used as graphic elements inadvertisements for almost

In the late 19th century, rubber farmers in the Amazon, who monopolized the production of latex and benefited from its high pricesin world markets, amassed fortunes and turned Belém and

happened then, as much inBelém as in Manaus, wassomething paradoxical;essentially, a mimicking of European fads.
In other words, the import of European bourgeois taste to
rubber cycle Amazon wasartificial and frivolous, for there was no direct and clear correspondence between theregion’s local developmentsand the aestheticrepresentations generated by
the bourgeois world of industrialized Europe.
With the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, thereigning political orientationasked for a total rupture with
Monarchy’s traditions. The governor of Pará was AugustoMontenegro when colonel Antônio Lemos was elected intendant of Belém,becoming the omnipotent lord of the city.
The most polemical political figure in Pará during the Old Republic(1889-1930), Lemos wascharacterized by hisextraordinary work capacity.

immersed in gold and its population had increased with the arrival of Northeastern immigrants. It was the right moment for itsBelle Époque. The ranks of thesocial elite were expanded,

Inspired by Paris and itsboulevards , there-urbanization project of the city shows how important it was for theregional elite to follow thesteps of great Europeannations. Belém was directly
connected to everything that happened in the Frenchcapital, and made Paris itscivilizational mirror, copying everything from the latest fashion trend to behavior manners regarded as chic.
