for –AR and –ER verbs do not occur in the
preterite tense. However, -IR verbs that have stem changes in the present tense require a different stem change in the preterite tense. These changes occurs in the él, ella, Ud. form and the ellos, ellas, Uds. form. This stem change is shown in parentheses after infinitives in the book.
