THERE IS / THERE ARE:
del verbo to be, aunque lo preceda.
There is a book on the table.
There are two books on the table.
7
podéis ver a continuación:
1. Utilizamos there is cuando el sujeto es:
Un sustantivo contable singular:
There is an apple in the basket.
Normalmente
no se utiliza el artículo definido the con there is:
*There is the apple in the basket.
Un sustantivo incontable:
There is some tea in the pot.
There is ice on the street.
Los sustantivos incontables pueden llevar cuantificadores como some, any,
much, a lot of etc.
2. Utilizamos there are cuando el sujeto es:
Un sustantivo plural:
There are two apples in the basket.
Importante:
There are a lot of people in the street.
8
There are twenty children in the class.
La forma negativa de las expresiones existenciales there is / there are se
construye con la partícula negativa not:
There isn’t any apple in the basket.
There aren’t twenty children in the class.
cuantificador any.
to be y el sujeto “postizo” there:
Is there an apple in the basket?
Are there twenty children in the class?
EJERCICIOS PARA PRACTICAR LA LECCION:
Completa las frases con la forma correcta del verbo to be en presente.
1. (be) there a public hospital in your town?
2. Check the timetable because I don't think there (be) any trains after
eleven o'clock.
3. How much sugar (be) there in the box?
4. At this time of night there (not be) many people in the street.
5. There (be) a lot of money in this account.
6. Nowadays there (be) a lot of ways to study English.
9
7. There (be) very little interest in this project.
8. (be) there many women in your class?
9. There (be) five books missing from the shelf.
10. There (not be) any milk in the fridge.
PRESENT SIMPLE:
I play tennis.
He works in an office.
They
travel to Madrid.
verbo PLAY (jugar). Observe
que en el modo afirmativo, en la
3º persona del singular, se le
añade una “S” al verbo.
He eats vegetables. Él come
vegetales.
Alice dances at the theatre.
Alice baila en el teatro.
10
The dog breaks the fence.
Si el verbo es FISH (pescar), se conjugará: He fishes at the sea. Él pesca en
el mar.
Si el verbo es KISS (besar), se conjugará: She kisses to her boyfriend. Ella
besa a su novio.
Si el verbo es WATCH (observar), se conjugará: He watches the mountain.
Él observa la montaña.
Si el verbo es FIX (arreglar), se conjugará: He fixes his car. Él arregla su
coche.
Si el verbo es GO (ir), se conjugará: She goes to the office. Ella va a la
oficina.
Ella
lugar de DO NOT o DOESN’T en vez de DOES NOT.
I don’t play tennis. Yo no juego al tenis.
He doesn’t work in an office. Él no trabaja en una oficina.
They don’t travel to Madrid.

utiliza el verbo jugar (TO
PLAY) a modo de ejemplo.
Puede utilizarse además
para referirse a situaciones
que suceden alrededor del
momento en el que se habla,
aunque no precisamente
17
He is working in a bank.
debe estar trabajando ahora).

SOME or ANY:
Some y any se utilizan cuando no queremos o no podemos expresar con
precisión la cantidad. Some y any hacen referencia a cantidades
A nivel
semántico, some y any son sinónimos.
Some
I have some friends.
Incontable (singular):
I have some money.
Any
22
Contable en plural:
Do you have any friends? No, I don’t have any friends.
Incontable (singular):
Do you have any money? No, I don’t have any money.
Observaciones:
Would you like some wine? (en una cena)
Could I have some more cake, please?
I never drink any wine.

GERUNDS: (Gerundio)
To play / jugar playing / jugando
CONSIDERACIONES
To sit sitting (sentarse)
To write writing (escribir)
To lie lying (mentir)
USO DEL GERUNDIO
- Como sujeto en una expresión
Reading English is easier than speaking it / Leer inglés es más fácil que
hablarlo
- En algunas expresiones de prohibición
No smoking / Prohibido fumar
I am reading a book / Estoy leyendo un libro
27
After swimming I felt cold / Después de nadar me sentí resfriado
They had difficulty in finding a parking place / Tuvieron dificultad para
encontrar una plaza de estacionamiento.
- Como complemento de un verbo
His hobby is painting / Su hobby es la pintura
- Se utiliza frecuentemente después de los verbos 'to go' y 'to come'
Come sailing with us next Saturday / Ven a navegar con nosotros el
próximo sábado .
28
THE WEATHER
29
In English, we usually use it is when we talk about the weather.
This is normally: It is + adjective OR It is + verb-ing
It is + adjective = A description of the weather
It is sunny today.
It's hot and humid today.
It'sa nice day today.
30
We can also say:
It is a + adjective + day (or morning/afternoon/night)
It's a fine day.
It's a windy afternoon.
It is + verb-ing = This type of weather is happening now.
It's drizzling outside.
It's snowing.
Take an umbrella, it's raining.
You can also use it is in different tenses
It was cold yesterday.
It will be cloudy tomorrow.
When you are learning vocabulary about the weather, it is important to remember that
some of the words have a noun form, a verb form and/or an adjective form. For example:
Rain: (noun) The game was cancelled because of the rain.
Rain: (verb) I think it is going to rain later.
Rainy: (adjective) It's a rainy day.
It pays to learn the different forms of each word and when they are used.
Nouns and Adjectives
Many times when we are talking about the weather, we can add the letter Y to the end of
a noun to make it an adjective.
rain (noun) - rainy (adjective)
sun (noun) - sunny (adjective)
wind (noun) - windy (adjective)
cloud (noun) - cloudy (adjective)
fog (noun) - foggy (adjective)
Questions about the weather
People commonly ask about the weather by saying:
What's it like out(side)?
How's the weather?
What's the weather like?
What's the temperature?
What's the weather forecast?
31
"Will" no es variable.
Sujeto + will + infinitivo (sin "to").
I will see my friends next week. He will get ill if he doesn't eat properly. (Se pondrá enfermo si no come
bien.) John and Mary will get married soon. (John y Mary se casarán pronto.)
I'll phone him tomorrow. (Lo llamaré mañana.)
She'll fall off that bike if she isn't careful.
They'll paint the house this weekend. (Pintarán la casa este fin de semana.) John'll come and visit us in a few days.
I shall see my friends next week.
I'll see my friends next week.
Will - el uso en la vida real:
Predicción para el futuro.
"Will" se utiliza para expresar una predicción.
32
I think the weather will be better tomorrow. (Creo que hará mejor tiempo mañana.)
What do you think will happen at the end of this book?
One day I shall (will) have a beautiful house in the country.
One day I'm going to have a beautiful house in the country.
Don't phone now; they'll be in bed. (No llames ahora; estarán acostados.) I can hear a car outside. It'll be John. (Escucho un coche fuera. Será
Juan.)
"Going to" para futuro.
Lo básico - la estructura:
Podemos emplear "going to" como auxiliar para expresar futuro. Su forma requiere la presencia del auxiliar "to be":
Sujeto + to be + going to + infinitivo. I am going to study more English. (Voy a estudiar más inglés.)
John and Mary are going to get married. (John y Mary se van a casar.)
33
I'm going to get my hair cut tomorrow. (Me voy a cortar el pelo mañana.)
John and Mary are going to buy a house in the country next year.
We're going to start eating more healthily next month.
Look at that plane! It's going to crash! (¡Mira el avión! ¡Va a estallar!) Look at those clouds. It's going to rain. (Mira esas nubes. Va a llover.)
Look at Mary. She's going to have a baby. (Mira a Mary.
When I'm older, I'm going to have a beautiful house in the country. When I'm older, I'll have a beautiful house in the country.
I think it's going to rain next week.
I think it'll rain next week.

I have sent the letter.
Yo he enviado la carta.
sean verbos regulares o verbos irregulares).
I have bought a new dress. Yo he comprado un nuevo
vestido.
You have studied the
lesson.
Tú has estudiado la lección.
He has broken the window. Él ha roto la ventana.
She has lost the keys.
Have I bought a new dress? He comprado un nuevo vestido?
Have you studied the lesson? Has estudiado la lección?
Has he broken the window? Ha roto él la ventana?
Has she lost the keys?
35
I have not bought a new
dress.
Yo no he comprado un nuevo
vestido.
You have not studied the
lesson.
Tú no has estudiado la lección.
He has not broken the
window.
Él no ha roto la ventana.
She has not lost the keys.
I have sold my car.
Yo he vendido mi auto. (Presente Perfecto)I sold my car this morning.
Yo vendí mi auto esta mañana. (Pasado Simple)

Infinitivo sin "to" + terminación -ed.
(Ver
tabla de verbos irregulares)
To watch → watch + -ed → watched (regular verb)
To write → writen (irreglar verb)
Funciones del 'past participle'
1 Formar los tiempos perfectos.
I have worked. (He trabajado.)
2 Formar la pasiva.
Two men were arrested yesterday. (Dos hombres fueron
arrestados ayer.)
verbo 'to be' u otro copulativo.
He gave me a broken glass. (Me dio un vaso roto.)
I´m bored. (Estoy aburrido.)
38
adjetivo.
A boring person.
A bored person.
The people invited to the party were very noisy. (La gente invitada
a la fiesta era muy ruidosa.)
5 En subordinadas adverbiales.
Retired many years ago, he lived happily(Retirado hace
muchos años, vivía feliz.)
6 Con la estructura:
have/get + sustantivo o pronombre + past participle.
I had my car repaired. (Me repararon el coche.)
I need to have my car fixed for tomorrow. (Necesito tener mi
coche arreglado para mañana.)

BEEN/GONE:
- be was/were been
- go went gone
- I have been to London twice.
been ——————> gone ——————>
<—————–
Ejemplos:
I have been to the dentist and he said I have cavities (caries) = he ido y ya he vuelto, por tanto, ida y vuelta.
My mum has gone to the dentist. She’s not here yet, but will be back soon = se ha ido al dentista, pero todavía no ha vuelto, por tanto, sólo una dirección, ida.

EVER/NEVER:
like that! Nunca jamas me vuelvas a hablar de esa forma! If you ever see
him, tell him he still owes me money.
me debe dinero.
Have you ever heard of Flint Westwood? ¿Has oído hablar alguna vez de
Flint Westwood?
I never want to see this boy in your bedroom again.
I don't ever want to see this boy in your bedroom again.
He has never seen a nose so big.

restrictivos como only, first :
