The LouvreA HALF-DAY TOURVisiting the Louvre is a ne art. Its complex labyrinth of galleries and staircases spiralling three wings and four oors renders discovery a snakes-and-ladders experience. Initiate yourself with this three-hour itinerary – a playful mix of Mona Lisa obvious and up-to-the-minute unexpected.
Arriving by the stunning main entrance, pick up colour-coded oor plans at the lower-ground- oor information desk beneath Pei’s glass pyramid, ride the escalator up to Sully and swop passport for multimedia guide (limited descriptions in galleries) at the wing entrance.
The Louvre is as much about spectacular architecture as masterly art: to appreciate this zip up and down Sully’s Escalier Henri II to admire Venus de Milo then up parallel Escalier Henri IV to the palatial displays in Cour Khorsabad. Cross room 1 to uncover the escalator up to the 1st oor and staircase-as-art L’Esprit d’Escalier. Next traverse 25 consecutive galleries (thank-you oor plan!) to ip conventional contemplation on its head with Cy Twombly’s The Ceiling, and the hypnotic Winged Victory of Samothrace sculpture – just two rooms away – which brazenly insists on being admired from all angles. End with the impossibly famous Liberty Leading the People, Mona Lisa and Virgin & Child.
TOP TIPS » Cent saver Visit after 3pm or in the
evening when tickets are cheaper » Crowd dodgers The Denon wing
is always packed; visit on late nights Wednesday or Friday or trade Denon in for the notably quieter Richelieu wing.
» 2nd floor Not for first-timers: squir-rel away its more specialist works for subsequent visits
» Multimedia guide Worth it, if only to press the ‘Where am I?’ button when lost

Bienvenidos a París
