MCI funded program:Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP)
Information that is timely, accurate, and comprehensive
Needs assessment and referrals to appropriate services that meet individual needs
Empower newcomers to access information in a self-directed manner
Helps newcomers make informed decisions in regard to their settlement-related needs
Welcomes and orient newcomer youth to the Centre
Provides newcomer youth with information and appropriate referrals to community resources and services
Provides newcomer youth with subsidized membership to the YMCA recreational programs (HFRs)
Provides newcomer youth with a safe environment for socializing and networking with their peers
Connects newcomer youth with summer job programs, training and volunteer opportunities
Facilitate the integration of newcomer families and students into the education system and community
Participate in the school’s reception and orientation process for newcomer students and their families
Organize group information sessions and workshops for newcomer students and parents
Support high school students in dealing with problems of adjustment, language barriers, and cultural differences
Facilitate constructive and culturally-sensitive communication between the school staff and newcomer students and their families
Provide information to school staff about cultural and settlement related issues
Facilitate referrals and access to available resources and services in the community,
SWIS Workers are based in elementary/secondary schools (Public/Catholic School Boards) with a high number of newcomer students
Provide newcomers with an easy access to settlement, community, social services, and other support systems
Introduce newcomer families to library programs, services, and memberships
Organize group information sessions and workshops for newcomers
Promote and foster civic engagement and community participation
Facilitate referrals and access to available resources in the community
Client needs assessment, goal setting and service planning
One-on-one and family settlement assistance/counselling
Information about relevant services that meet the specific needs of newcomers
Referral to other community and government services
Assistance with forms, interpretation/translation, and advocating on behalf of clients
NIC/NYC/SWIS/LSP/NSP provides services to:
Permanent Residents/Landed Immigrants
Protected persons as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Individuals who have been selected, in Canada or overseas, to become permanent residents pending completion of medical, security and criminal verification statutory requirements, and who have been informed, by a letter from CIC
Convention Refugees and protected persons overseas who have been selected for resettlement in Canada by CIC
Live-In Caregivers
SWIS & LSP, through partnership agreements with School Boards and Hamilton Public Library can also serve newcomers who have acquired Canadian citizenship as well as Refugee Claimants and International students
In addition, NSP is mandated to serve all newcomers regardless of their immigration status as long as they are in need of settlement services
