Unlike English, Spanish has two words that loosely translate as for: por and para. These two prepositions are not interchangeable. Study the following charts to see how they are used.

In many cases it is grammatically correct to use either por or para in a sentence. The meaning of the sentence is different, however, depending on which preposition is used.

Uses of Para
Los astronautas van para la luna. El sábado viajamos para Chicago. El mes pasado, salimos para Madrid.
Destination: Toward a place, in the direction of
La composición es para el lunes. No tenemos tarea para manaña. (Chiste) Voy a hacer el proyecto para el 20 de noviembre.
Future Deadline
Trabajo para ganar dinero. Estudian para sacar buenas notas.
In order to + Infinitive
Esta botella es para agua. El jabón es para el baño. La gasolina es para el
tanque.
Use/ Purpose
Tengo un regalo para Juan. Los estudiantes tienen la tarea para la profesora.
Recipient of Something
Para un joven, es muy alto y atlético. Para una niña, toca el piano muy bien. Para un americano, habla muy bien el español.
Comparisons
Trabajaremos para el gobierno. Las profesoras trabajan para Hyde.
Employment/ Career
Para mí, la clase de español es la más interesante.
Para ella, la moda no es importante.

¡Atención! Por is also used in several idiomatic expressions, including:
por aquí around here por ejemplo for example por eso that’s why; therefore por fin finally
Summary PARA is mostly used with destinations,
deadlines, recipients, things in the future…think about heading toward a certain end goal; anywhere you can use “in order to” you can apply PARA. Para is also used for opinions and employment.
POR is less straightforward that PARA and is used for a variety of things, including substitutions, motives, means of, general locations, etc. It does not usually describe what is anticipated to happen but rather how or why it happens.
