Enel, a través de su filial chilena Enel Generación Chile, está construyendo en la cuenca alta del río Maule, el proyecto de la central hidroeléctrica Los Cóndo-
res, una central de pasada que utilizará los recursos hídricos del embalse de la Laguna del Maule y que contará con una capacidad instalada de aproximadamen-te 150 MW, cuya inversión financiera se ubica aproximadamente a los US$660 millones.
Después que a fines de 2011 la Comisión de Evaluación Ambiental de la Región del Maule aprobó la Declaración de Impacto Ambiental (DIA), permitió a la empresa diseñar el proyecto bajo los requerimientos establecidos por la misma donde gran parte de las obras tu-vieron que ser realizadas bajo tierra, lo que da un importante beneficio ambien-tal al paisaje, suelo, vegetación y fauna de la zona.
El proyecto está localizado íntegramente en la comuna de San Cle-mente, Región del Maule, ubicada a 300 km al sur de la capital del país. El emplazamiento de las obras de la central está comprendido entre las
cotas 1.400 y 2.200 msnm.Técnicamente los Cóndores es una
central hidroeléctrica de pasada con re-gulación mensual, que utiliza las aguas del Embalse Laguna del Maule.
Este importante proyecto respon-de a uno de los principales retos de la nueva normativa de generación eléctrica nacional, en el cual se prioriza el com-promiso del estado con el desarrollo del país aportando energía eléctrica limpia, renovable y de bajo costo de operación, fortaleciendo así la posición de liderazgo y estrategia de crecimiento del mercado de energía eléctrica a nivel nacional.
Los Cóndores será una de las centra-les hidroeléctricas de mayor relevancia por su capacidad instalada en el sistema eléctrico de Chile, ya que la energía adi-cional que aporte permitirá reducir los costos del sistema eléctrico, y contribuir a disminuir los precios de energía. Don-de en un contexto general la energía del proyecto es equivalente al consumo del 4% de la Región Metropolitana y 15% de la Región de Valparaíso.
El perfil de generación de Los Cóndores se comportará en contraci-clo respecto del resto de las centrales del parque hidroeléctrico del Sistema
Interconectado Central (SIC), debido a la capacidad de regulación del Embal-se Laguna del Maule, lo que permitirá disponer de generación proveniente de centrales hidroeléctricas en época de primavera/verano, cuando el resto del parque hidroeléctrico tiene menor dispo-nibilidad del recurso.
Su mayor generación se produce entre enero y abril cuando existe mayor déficit de oferta hidroeléctrica, pero lo relevante que es coincidente con el período de mayores extracciones por las necesidades de riego en el río Maule, permitiendo el uso de acuerdo a la can-tidad de aguas disponibles. Este justa-mente ha sido un factor muy importante en la fase de diseño del proyecto, debido a que los ingenieros tenían que respe-tar el Convenio de Operación de 1947, el principal instrumento que regula las extracciones del embalse laguna del Maule, para poder generar la cantidad de energía eléctrica permitida.
Como mencionamos anteriormen-te, el 100% de las obras civiles fueron realizadas en el subsuelo, reduciendo al mínimo el impacto ambiental en la cuen-ca del Maule.
